My greenbroke 12 yr old gelding was trail riding wonderfully when i got leukemia and was unable to ride for 3?

yrs. now when i tie him up to brush him or try to saddle him he paws madly at the post or tree or whatever he is tied to. why does he do this and how do i stop it?
