I'm dating a wonderful guy, but people I know get so hung up on the fact that he isnt 'attractive'? Who cares?

I have started dating a guy recently, who I completely adore. Honestly, he is the nicest guy I've ever met and treats me so wonderfully. He isn't conventionally attractive, which I couldn't care less about but everyone i know seems to pay so much attention to. People sometimes seem shocked when I introduce him as my boyfriend, they sometimes act like they cant believe im with him or that he really lucked out getting someone like me. Why are people so hung up on such superficial crap? I usually ignore them, but sometimes its just frustrating to hear all of it. So what if im not into looks? Why do people think its their business to comment on who I date?
