Is it wrong to call civillians "worthless"?

I've heard some military personnel (mostly Marines) refer to civillians as "worthless" and "soft", who have no direction in their lives. Do you think this is wrong? What if some people just don't want a military lifestyle? I'm personally rethinking my choices. the aspect of going through Basic Training scares the hell out of me.
